So, what is a Doula anyway??
'Doula' is a Greek word meaning; Servant Girl or Slave. Through time it has been taken to mean "mothering the mother". A doula is another woman who provides constant and continuous care for the new or re-newed mother. Some women are not yet familiar with the term 'Doula' and instead refer to these women as Professional Birth Coaches. Regardless of which term you use the role of the doula is always the same. There are 2 different types of Doulas: the Labor or Birth Doula and the Post Partum Doula.
The Labor & or Birth Doula: Usually gives prenatal appointments, stays with the mother through her labor and birth, and follows up with a post partum appointment. Although duties and skills vary from doula to doula; most doulas are educated in some form of female anatomy, labor and birthing postions, coping methods, hospital proceedures and use of the birth ball.
The Post Partum Doula: Will tend to the needs of the mother after she has had her baby. Most PPDoulas will help with breastfeeding - guiding the mother and supporting her decisions, some cleaning, help with the younger siblings, and most importantly providing emotional support and comfort to the new or re-newed mother. Again, the role of each individual doula varies, and by no means are they all limited to what i have mentioned above.
